St. Valentine's Day descends from an ancient Roman tradition. The Roman festival of
Lupercalia was held Feb. 15 in honor of Roman gods Lupercus and Faumus.

The festivities included the pairing of young men and women, sometimes perfect
strangers. Young Roman men randomly drew the names of Roman ladies. The two
would then be paired until the following year's festivities.

The modern holiday was named after a priest named Valentine, who defied the law of

    flowered foliage
    vying
    for a chance to grow
    among the cracks in
    the alabaster
